This is the latest website for Irish Laser II sailors. The International Laser II is a strict one-design, high-performance single trapeze and symmetrical spinnaker dinghy. From here we intend to provide information on upcoming events, and as a tool for re-organising the class in Ireland. Re-organise? After the European Championships in Skerres in 2004, the Irish class saw a huge falloff in numbers, from 23 boats in the 2004 Nationals to just 7 in the 2005 event. A nucleus of interested Laser II sailors has come together to re-build the class in Ireland, for a variety of reasons; * We love sailing Laser II's * Other high performance dinghies are well out of our price range * We want to race our boats and encourage others to sail these amazing boats * Among our ranks we have champions from other classes, and some of Ireland's most competitive team racers. Why Laser II's? Very cheap, simple high performance racing dinghies, with ISAF International Class status and a following of down-to-earth sailors ranging in age from schoolkids to parents. * Laser II's in racing condition can be picked up for a few hundred Euro to about €3500 for a relativly new boat in International standard racing condition * Speed differences between new and old boats are virtually non-existent. This is pure one-design sailing. A 16 year old boat (8154) won the 2003 World Championships against new boats. * They are an easy boat to sail, and learn to sail in given the right instruction and conditions, but are challenging for sailors of any level to sail and race well. * They are unique in that hulls, sails, foils and spars are only made by one manufacturer, and when looked after can give many years of racing life, including sails.
